WALL-E must go along with us to a Martian colony as well because it is such a powerful reminder of what we can do when we don't take care of our planet and the importance of taking care of each other and the world around us. In the robot's determination and hope, the film shows deep human values. It shows us the love, perseverance, and responsibility that will be needed to build a rich future in a new world. It is also a warning against over-reliance on technology and neglect of the environment, so it is both inspirational and cautionary about repeating Earth's same mistakes on Mars as we start again.

Lastly, we chose The Lion King because it contains universal truths in identity, responsibility, and the circle of life. These are examples of things necessary in building a new society from scratch. Its story of the redemption of Simba from exile back to kingship reminds us that facing the past and embracing our role in its entirety is necessary for individual and communal progress. With its stories of rebirth and legacy, The Lion King has the power to inspire future generations on Mars to lead fearlessly, respect the natural world, and hold on to their heritage on Earth.

Star Wars: A New Hope deserves a spot in our Mars colony because it embodies the spirit of hope, perseverance, and imagination values needed for resetting man in a new homeworld. As a work of culture, it preserves part of Earth's cultural heritage while inspiring us with its timeless story of struggle against unimaginable odds. Its theme may help to construct ethical thinking in an era of young people, and its entertainment value helps with mental health during the violence of space. In generations to come that are born on Mars, it will be a reminder of how far we've come and a symbol of how far we can go.

The first score chosen is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, composed when Beethoven was nearly deaf. It has been able to stand as one of the most profound artistic achievements of any musician. The final movement, “The Ode to Joy,” celebrates unity and brotherhood beyond any barrier. This message is sure to be impactful in a colony where cooperation and optimism are of the utmost importance. The way this gem was created shows that beauty can arise even through great struggle.

The second chosen piece is The Beatles’ Abbey Road, which captures a crucial moment at the end of an era. Recorded in 1969, it was able to blend innovation with harmony, both musically and personally. Its closing medley, with the final line “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make,” offers a simple and profound truth. It’s a reminder of compassion, creativity, and teamwork, which will help foster a sense of shared purpose in building a new society.

Last, but most certainly not least, is the piece Louis Armstrong’s Hello Dolly! This song radiates warmth, optimism, and joy. Armstrong’s unmistakable voice and trumpet celebrate the simple pleasure of connection. A sentiment that is crucial to the isolated Mars settlement. His performance embodies resilience and happiness in the face of hardship at a time on Earth when it was very tense. It’s a song that reminds us to care for one another.

Starry Night has a different representation, as it acts as a bridge between the past and future. It shows how people have always gazed into the stars with wonder. This will offer a visual metaphor to the colonizers that no matter how far they travel, when they look up in the night sky, it will always be the same. This will give the colonizers a feeling of connection to Earth in the sense that on either planet, they are still looking at the same night sky.

The Mona Lisa can be argued to be the most studied and recognizable painting in human history. The 500-year-old painting represents a sense of timelessness and continuation of the human spirit. The painting was also created during the Renaissance, a time when science, art, and curiosity rose into popularity. Humanity colonizing another planet will also mark a new age of technology, like the one the Mona Lisa was created in long ago.

Fighting Temeraire depicts the HMS Temeraire of the British Navy being towed by a steam paddle ship in order to be scrapped. This represents new technology replacing old and reflects on how things once seen as great, such as the HMS Temeraire, can be phased out by more advanced technology, such as the steam-powered boat carrying the HMS Temeraire to its demise. This correlates to the astronauts leaving Earth and advancing to colonization on Mars. The old Earth that has harbored humanity for thousands of years is being replaced by something new: Mars.

A painting dedicated to the Peninsula War and the true reality that many Spanish “rebels” faced while retaliating against a force wanting their land and freedom. Painted by Francisco de Goya, who lived through the war, he was always an expressive artist, using reality to set a tone of humanity and humility amongst others. While this painting can be seen as brutal, it sets an example of what can be the possible outcome of disagreements and egotistical views. Mars deserves a setting of peace and a place for opinionated people to come together and put their thoughts to work. The Third of May 1808 would be a simple yet powerful detail of the Mars colony, which is why the painting should absolutely be included.

Mars will have exceptional views like no other. Different from sunsets on Earth, the red, rocky terrain against the blue-lit sky makes a marvelous view for those roaming the floor of the colony; however, the heart will always yearn for what it knows. The views of Earth are unmatched, from forests to mountains to the beaches along the coasts. The view of Toledo by El Greco captures just that. View of Toledo, or “Vista de Toledo” in Spanish, captures the beauty of one of Earth’s best landscapes of a city view. This reminder can help cherish the memories created on Earth and help treat the feeling of being “homesick.” This painting will be a great addition to the Mars colony due to its significance towards human life, especially for those who are more likely to miss their original home.

Religion is a value and belief that almost everyone cherishes. It is a value that people identify with and rely on for answers to their struggles and their blessings. The Last Supper, painted by Leonardo da Vinci, is a representation of religion’s most powerful moments regarding Christianity. A portrayal of emotional turmoil and a show of betrayal. While this painting is more negative than positive, the religious aspect presented in the colony will provide some type of emotional and religious support, no matter which religion a person may follow. The Mars colony deserves religious hope and prosperity, a person/figure to look forward to for answers and reason. The Last Supper is an exceptional piece of art that belongs in a colony where research and hopes, and dreams will prosper; that is why it deserves its place to be represented in the colony.
